Cottonseed oil is an edible oil extracted from cottonseeds, a by-product obtained after cotton ginning and delinting. The oil is rich in essential fatty acids for human health: it contains 44%-55% linoleic acid, 18%-30% oleic acid, and approximately 21%-24% palmitic acid, along with stearic acid, arachidic acid, and others. With a human absorption rate of up to 98%, cottonseed oil accounts for about 17% of China’s edible oil consumption.

Gossypol’s weak acidity allows it to react with alkali, forming water-soluble sodium gossypolate (insoluble in organic solvents), which is removed with soapstock. Furthermore, the soap formed by alkali and free fatty acids acts as an effective surfactant and adsorbent, trapping proteins, colloidal impurities, and pigments. This achieves simultaneous deacidification, degumming, and decolorization. Consequently, alkali refining is the predominant deacidification method for cottonseed oil.
