Overview
Rice bran wax is a natural plant wax primarily extracted from rice bran, a byproduct of rice processing. It is a food-grade and widely used natural wax. This substance is a pale yellow to light brown solid at room temperature, with a fine texture and mild odor.
Features
Rice bran wax is mainly composed of ester compounds formed from higher fatty acids and fatty alcohols, while also containing small amounts of free fatty acids, alcohols, and hydrocarbons.
Its melting point is between 75 and 82 degrees Celsius, which allows it to remain solid at room temperature while easily melting and processing upon moderate heating. Compared to other plant waxes, rice bran wax has higher hardness while maintaining good flexibility.
Regarding solubility, rice bran wax is insoluble in water but soluble in many organic solvents such as chloroform, benzene, and hot ethanol. This characteristic gives it an advantage in industrial applications. Its density is about 0.95 to 0.98 g/cm³, slightly lower than the density of water.
The rice bran wax production process mainly includes the following steps:
Modern rice bran wax production processes emphasize environmental protection and efficiency, mostly using food-grade solvents for extraction and employing techniques such as molecular distillation to improve product purity. Temperature and time are strictly controlled during the production process to ensure the consistent quality of the final product.

Huatai Oil Machinery provides an advanced method for producing refined rice bran wax, effectively solving the problem of refining raw rice bran wax through industrial pressing.
The method involves melting the raw rice bran wax into a liquid, vacuum drying to remove moisture, pumping it into an extraction tank, adding solvent and adsorbent, reflux extraction, and allowing it to settle and separate.
The lower layer, a black gelatinous substance, is used for other purposes. The upper layer, a wax-oil mixture, is kept warm and filtered to remove trace impurities, then cooled to crystallize.
The upper mixed oil is then passed through an evaporation system to recover the solvent, yielding a neutral oil. The lower layer, a crystallized mixed wax, enters a rotary drum vacuum filter to separate solid wax and oil.
The oil is recycled. The solid wax is heated and vacuum evaporated to concentrate, removing trace amounts of solvent and moisture, yielding liquid rice bran wax. This liquid is then cooled and granulated to obtain refined rice bran wax.
This novel and unique method integrates physical and chemical reactions, effectively solving the technical challenges of industrial rice bran wax refining. It boasts high production efficiency, low cost, energy saving, and environmental friendliness, expanding the economic value of rice bran wax.
In the food industry, rice bran wax is commonly used as a coating agent for fruit surface treatment to extend shelf life. It forms a thin protective layer on the surface of fruit, reducing moisture evaporation and oxygen contact without affecting the fruit's normal respiration. This application method is safe and reliable, meeting food safety standards.
Rice bran wax is also widely used in the daily chemical industry; it is one of the basic ingredients in many cosmetics and skin care products. In products such as lipsticks and lip balms, rice bran wax provides good shaping and spreadability. In candle manufacturing, rice bran wax is favored for its long burning time and low smoke.
In industry, rice bran wax is used in precision casting, electronic component packaging, and other fields. It also plays an important role in products such as polishing agents and leather care products. In pharmaceutical excipients, rice bran wax can be used as a tablet coating material and a matrix for sustained-release formulations.
