What is the Process of Extracting and Refining Palm Oil?

Palm oil extraction is a complex and intricate process. First, ripe palm fruit bunches are harvested and then undergo a series of processing steps. After harvesting, the palm fruit bunches are transported to the processing plant. At the plant, the first step is sterilization, which helps soften the fruit and kill any potentially present bacteria. Next, the fruit goes through a thresher (or stripper) to separate the palm fruits from the bunches. The separated palm fruits are then sent to the extraction stage.

Extraction typically employs mechanical pressing or solvent extraction methods. Mechanical pressing (often called expeller pressing) uses physical pressure to squeeze the oil out of the fruit. Solvent extraction utilizes specific solvents to extract the oil.

The extracted crude palm oil still contains impurities and requires a refining process. Refining includes several steps: degumming (to remove phospholipids and other gums), deacidification or neutralization (to reduce free fatty acid content), bleaching (to remove color pigments), and deodorization (to remove volatile compounds and odoriferous substances).
